Garage Door Opener Repair in Calgary

Why a garage door opener stops working, safe checks for LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers, and published Calgary repair and replacement prices.

Some causes are quick to check. On many Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers, Chamberlain says lights that flash 10 times point to a safety sensor problem, usually a sensor that is blocked or out of line. Lights that flash twice mean the LOCK button on the wall control is on, which locks out the remotes. Press LOCK to turn it off. Other brands signal differently, so check your manual.

The two sensors sit on each side of the door, no higher than 6 inches above the floor. Clear anything between them. Chamberlain also says sunlight shining into the receiving sensor can make the opener read the sensors as blocked.

If the door binds, sticks or reverses partway down, don't turn up the force setting. Chamberlain says never to use force adjustments to make up for a binding or sticking door, because improper adjustment could seriously injure or kill someone. A door that's hard to move may have a spring or track problem, not an opener problem.

DASMA says that under US federal law, openers made after 1992 must have photoelectric sensors or another safety-reverse feature. That's a US rule. We couldn't find an equivalent Canadian rule written for openers, but the hazard is the same here: Health Canada has recalled opener control panels over the risk of a door closing on someone. If yours has no safety reverse feature at all, DASMA says it should be replaced. Ask the shop whether repair or replacement makes more sense for your opener.

Common questions

Why won't my garage door close, with the opener lights flashing?

On many Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers, 10 flashes point to the safety sensors, which are usually blocked or out of line. Two flashes mean the LOCK button is on, which locks out the remotes. Other brands signal differently.
